Italy, Google and the web
Three Google executives convicted for privacy violation for a video posted on YouTube in which italian students
mistreated an autistic schoolmate.
The following is the press release from the Association Vivi Down Onlus hat has filed and won the case:
February 24, 2010
Vivi Down association expresses its satisfaction at the ruling today, as it recognizes the importance of people’s right to privacy, which was the main reason why the case had been brought.
As repeatedly stated, the goal was not to censor freedomof expression on the Internet, but to obtain a ruling that recognized the protection of fundamental rights of individuals, which include the right to privacy.
In three months, when the the reasons for the sentence wil be available, we will read them carefully to understand the logical path argument followed by the court to pronounce a sentence so important.
My point of view
Google does not produce content, but aggregates them.
It ‘like saying that we are condemning the means and not one who performed the action.
Worse then that.
Without Google, the crime would not have been discovered, so the effort used for pursuing the means, would be best done if used for condemning the perpetrators.
Honestly, I do not see what’s to be happy about.
It ‘a black day for us all.
